Category: Geeks r Us
Hello all, does anyone use this software? I'm extremely new to it, and I'm not enjoying it so far. It sure seems to keep my system much busier than nod32 did.
Any tips or tricks are appreciated. Thank you!
Hmmm! I wouldn't use Mcafee/mcshite at all. My mum loves it though, so we both used to have Mcafee/Mcshite Security Centre on our now, dead PC and both our laptops. I switched to Avast earlier this year though, because past experience with Mcafee/Mcshite, has told me, don't trust it so far as you can throw it, so far as the security and protection of your PC's concerned. Seriously, it's the equivalent of a wet paper bag, resulting in a virus a week when I was running XP on the now dead PC, with Mcafee/Mcshite, Spybot and Windows Firewall as my only defences. Also, it's no go with JAWS for windows. When I was using it, I literally, had to click on the items I wanted to check or clean up with the mouse or mouse buttons via the JAWS cursor. It was a case of pot luck all the time, plus the frozen pop up windows which alert you to changes when they happen, well, I couldn't do anything with them other than restart the system to make 'em go away, because JAWS would simply, not play ball and tell me what was within those pop ups so I could either, cancel or accept whatever it was messaging at me. Avast all the way for each and every JAWS user, seriously. That will alert you in a screenreader-friendly fashion if any nasties break through to your system and actually let you deal with them, rather than you having to go on your hard drive, rootle it out and delete it manually. Bloody waste of time, not to mention very bad for your system's health, lol. Avast also has a simple interface full of tick/checkboxes, radio buttons and list views as oppose to a screenful of unidentifiable nothings and graphics like Mcafee/Mcshite, perfect for those of us using JAWS, so as a result, nothing gets away with buggering my laptop now, nothing, haahaa!

Hmmm, I was afraid of all that. Well, I didn't think it was useless, but it isn't easy on my system. Looking under processes, Mcafee seems to be running 4 or 5 processes. Nod32 may have ran a few things under processes, but it never seemed to bog down my system.
As far as accessibility goes with Mcafee, it is challenging! I use window-eyes, and this seems semi-doable, but who wants that on their system?
How much is avast?
As you all have maybe gathered, I got mcafee for free. Oy!
I tired that one for the free trial, but didn't like it as it constantly wanted to block stuff and wasn't very user-friendly with screen readers. I now run Windows 1-live care, which is really easy to use, alerts you to potential danger, asks when to block or run programs, and you can set days and times for full scans and tune-up. I run jfw and it works great with that.
Hmmm! In dollars, Avast methinks, is around $125. It cost me £60 for the license key.

Avast has a free version for home or non commercial use which is waht i use, As the above poster i can't reccomend it enough. And Nod 32 is probably one of the least resource intensive AV apps out there and probaby your best option if you are going to pay for AV. As for Macafee Its not as bad as the rep it gets on this site but i can see how its in accessability gives that impression, but i wouldn't reccommend it to anyone either.
I just got Avast, and I like how it has the voice to say when it's updated. I just don't really know how to use it. Does it just scan for you? And what do you do when it says it's found something that's potentially dangerous?
Before I started using Nod32, I used Windows Live one care. Its a fairly easy program to use. But its good, anything is better then McaFee, and Norton.
Well the Avast free version is as good as the paid version if you don't need to inker with it so that you have everyhing set just so, and it's good protection. MC is good, but must be kept updated like any. It is difficult to use with screen readers, bu if used properly it works. I am running Vipre and it is accessible, but cost about $30 per year, and it has no system lag at all. You can scan and play with no noticeable lag.
Now what you do with Avast when it finds something is continue the scan, or clean it then, but the keystrokes are different depending on how you have it setup, so that's difficult to explain. And also if you're running it on a laptop, or desktop. Play with it.
If I had Mc on my system I'd ditch it and get something better for screen readers.
Vipre? I have not heard of that one. $30 a year is quite reasonable.
Hmmm, leaning back to old faithful. Nod32 has been good to me and not hogging resources is important.
See what I get for accepting a freebee? *grin!* Now, I feel badly that I have wasted this license. I take it can't e transfered onto another system?
I suppose I could give avast a whirl.
If you have the key you can put it anyplace you want it. Lol. Give it to someone that can use it. If you want to try vipre simply go to www.sunbeltsoftware.com or google it, or bing it. You'll get 15 days to like it or hate it, and they offer support actually run by real people. hahaha.
Now please tell me, I can use add/remove to uninstall Mcafee. *smile*
I have revo, but that program makes me nervous lol!
Mcafee can't be removed with add/remove, I can tell you that now and for nothing, remembering the hell I went through trying to get it off this laptop myself. Only way you will be able to completely, remove, exterminate, get shot of it off your desktop or laptop is via this removal tool, Perfect Uninstaller. This can be found if you paste the following in your browser.

Poor Polka dots! You seem to be installing the kinds of programs that want you to just come to your senses and use them. Lol. You'd have to use the utility above, or remove it by searching it up and removing all things labeled such. If it's a new version there should be a burn tool that came with it, or an uninstaller. Their website also should instruct you on the removal of this item. It can and will be removed though, so not all is lost.
Success! As far a I know, that is.
I used add/remove to uninstallMcAfee, then when I went to renew Eset, they had links to further remove tools. So, I believe McAfee is removed pretty well.
Thanks all for your input and advice. Lesson learned! I'm sticking with Eset nod32 until further notice! *smile!* BTW, it is so nice to be able to call them and speak to someone farely quickly and in America.
It came installed with my new laptop, but I just uninstalled it because I prefer Avast.
with avast you can right click on items you want to scan to scan them but i do believe its is monitoring your system in the back ground a s well. also when it finds someting milicious just tabb around the warning windows to get to buttons like Delete and Move to chest and etc.
